Wear To: Fall Wedding

November 5, 2012 in wear to, wedding

I cannot believe that Fall is already half over. It seems like just yesterday we were eating red, white & blue cupcakes and sipping cold beer on the 4th of July. With the east coast still suffering the effects of Sandy, it is impossible to say it has been a good Fall so far. But for many of us life continues as normal and that includes attending Fall weddings for friends and family.

Summer weddings tend to be easy to dress for – light colors and flowy fabrics. Fall is a little more difficult as the weather is unpredictable and daylight hours are shorter. Before choosing an outfit, contact the bride and ask what the attire will be (sometimes the invitation will specify this). That way you will fit right in!

Here are three outfit ideas to fit any Fall wedding theme.

1) Evening Cocktail Wedding.

Cocktail events near the holidays are always fun because you can play dress up. Here you can channel your inner Joan with this Mad Men-esque attire.

Evening Wedding

Dress –  T. Tahari, $83, Earrings – Sabine, $20, Clutch – Lauren Merkin, $180, Tights – TopShop, $12, Boots – Vince Camuto, $169

2) Daytime Outdoor Wedding

With Fall leaves as a backdrop, any outdoor wedding is sure to be beautiful. Fit right in with a nature inspired ensemble. Be sure to bring layers to keep warm!

Outdoor Fall Wedding

Dress – Asos, $95, Sweater – Aniye By, $122, Fox Bracelet – Tory Burch, $125, Bag – Madewell, $168, Boots – Urban Outfitters, $69

3) Formal Nighttime Wedding

Who says you can’t wear black to a wedding? (My friend Laura proves it with her Audrey-inspired wedding look). This look can also be worn to holiday parties, so it’s a two-fer.

Formal Night Wedding

 Dress – Modcloth, $205, Necklace – Ben Amun, $155, Ring – Max & Chloe, $155, Jacket – Thimister, $1269, Heels – Modcloth, $5o

Wear To: Cruising

August 27, 2012 in wear to

In less than 2 weeks I will be embarking on my first ever cruise. When you think of cruising you probably think of warm, tropical islands with rows of woven hammocks tied between palm trees and endless pina coladas served in coconuts.

That’s not where I’m going.

My wonderful parents have invited my husband and I on a cruise up to the snowy frontier we call Alaska. Instead of weaving between tropical islands we will be getting up close and personal with glaciers and gold miners. And I couldn’t be more excited.

When I first started planning for the cruise I was thinking shorts and tank tops the whole time (it’s September which is summer after all). But no. I have been assured that the wind out at sea is chilling and that the glaciers are made of water that is frozen…because of the cold.  So my strategy has changed a bit. Instead of shorts I’m bringing pants and instead of tank tops I’m upgrading to at least a layered t-shirt. I’ll pack one heavy coat for the day we see the glaciers  and the rest of the time I’ll try to stay inside the ship – where it’s heated.

Here are some outfits I’m thinking for cruising days, dinner and a shore excursion.

Day CruisingTop – TopShop, $70  |  Bag – Marc by Marc Jacobs, $225  |  Bracelet – M. Cohen, $220  |  Loafers – Steve Madden, $80  |  Pants – DKNYC, $59

Dinner Time Necklace – Swell, $16  |  Top – TopShop, $56  |  Pants – TopShop, $76  |  Boots – Target, $30  |  Clutch – Vince Camuto, $118

Shore Excursion

Shirt – Aeropastale, $15  |  Necklace – Bauble Bar, $38  |  Backpack – Modcloth, $32  |  Boots – Wanted, $55  |  Skirt – BCBGMaxazria, $58

Have you ever been to Alaska in September? What did you pack?

Wear To: Summer Concert

August 4, 2012 in concert fashion, wear to

When I was in high school and college I went to a lot of concerts. Back then I could justify the cost of attending a huge arena concert by writing it off as a fun night out with friends. Now I am much more selective with the concerts I attend and more mindful of my disposable income. There are a few artists that I see whenever they are in town (ahem Howie Day), but those shows are  mostly in dark intimate venues. This year I have the opportunity to see Dave Matthews Band at my absolute favorite venue – the Gorge Amphitheater in central WA state.  I’m willing to shell out the money for this one because a. DMB is great live and b. I need to spend some more time outdoors this summer. As always, the dilemma of what I am going to wear has come up. Here are some ideas I came up with for an outdoor summer concert.

Are you attending any big concerts this summer?

Tank – Tees by Tina, $38  |  Necklace – AK Vintage, $130  |  Crochet Top – Modcloth, $55  |  Fringe Sandals – Butter, $110  |  Shorts – Quiksilver, $46

Laid Back Lady Concert

Tee – Rag & Bone, $96  |  Vest – Mango, $30  |  Bracelet – Asos, $17  |  Shoes – Toms, $54  |  Jeans – Topshop, $80

Wear To: Independence Day

June 29, 2012 in Holidays, wear to

The 4th of July falls on a  Wednesday this year, which is both good and bad.  The good is that we have a holiday in the middle of the week, a nice humpday break. The bad is that we have to get up early and drag ourselves to work the next morning. While Independence Day partying this year may be limited, that doesn’t mean there will be a shortage of fun events to attend.  That means unlimited opportunity to dress up and show pride in your country. Here are some fun, yet comfortable, Fourth of July outfits that you can wear with pride this coming Wednesday.

Striped Dress

Dress – Modcloth, $50  |  Necklace – Asos, $22  |  Bracelet – Gorjana, $55  |  Bag – DSW, $20
Shoes – Madewell, $80

BBQ Babe

Sunglasses – Charlotte Russe, $1.50  |  Earrings – Forever 21, $6  |  Clutch – Club Monaco, $120
Shoes – Fergalicious, $40  |  Dress – Tsumori Chisato, $379

 Firey for Fireworks

Top – Forever 21, $5   |  Bracelet – Bauble Bar, $45  |  Belt – Asos, $31  |  Wedges – Andre Assous, $154
Jeans – KUT, $74

Do you have any big 4th of July plans?

Wear To: A Bachelorette Party

June 22, 2012 in wear to

This past week I received something exciting in the mail – an invitation to my good friend’s bachelorette party.  My enthusiasm was quickly overcome with a terrifying thought – what am I going to wear?!  Since moving to Portland six years ago I haven’t had much a need for “going out” clothes (in fact, I don’t think the term “dress code” even exists here). My closet is lacking in what I would consider true “party” clothes, nor do I much want them. So I’m tasked with coming up with an outfit that I can wear for a night out with the girls and then later on in my day to day.

I put together a few ideas and I would love to know what you think of them. My favorite look is the “Party Ready in Red”, but they all have aspects I like. Which is your favorite?

Party in Red

Black Tank – Theyskens Theory, $36  |  Triange Necklace – Pac Sun, $11  |  Red Lipstick – Nars, $24
Red Jeans – Charlotte Russe, $30  |  Platform Sandals – Forever 21, $40  |  Teal Bag – Rebecca Minkoff, $195

Glitter Good Times

Earrings – Forever 21, $5  |  Glitter Dress – BCBGeneration, $45  |  Croc Bangle - Forever 21, $9
Glitter Heels – Michael Antonio, $45  |  Pink Bag – Rebecca Minkoff, $225

Pub Crawl in Coral

Glitter Tank – Asos, $50  |  Jacket – Charlotte Russe, $37  |  Triangle Bracelet – House of Harlow, $60  |  High Low Skirt – Urban Outfitters, $59  |  Coral Pumps – Charlotte Russe, $39  |  Black Chain Bag – CC Skye, $275
